What’s Reiki Healing?
We all want to feel better, don’t we?
Many of us reach for traditional methods — like medicine, vitamins, and exercise — whether we’re battling daily aches and pains, chronic illness, mood swings, or simply a lack of vigor and enthusiasm.
But more and more people are seeking out a host of non-traditional, holistic methods to balance their energy and even heal.
Reiki, a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation, is one of those methods.
The Practice of Energy Healing
Reiki is a form of energy healing, or energy medicine. The technique involves a practitioner channeling energy to a client, thereby activating the natural healing process and restoring balance and health to mind, body, and spirit. Reiki is administered through the “laying of hands” (which doesn’t necessarily involve touching) and can also be provided through long-distance techniques.
Energy healing has existed for centuries in various forms. The energy centers of the body, known as chakras, have been described in ancient Hindu texts and written about in the foundation of Chinese medicine. Yoga practitioners and acupuncturists are both familiar with chakras.
Reiki therapy isn’t scientifically proven. But neither is the power of prayer, the power of faith, the power of love, or even the power of fear. And yet, we don’t doubt those unseen forces exist.
Reiki and Quantum Physics
Still, for those who prefer a more substantive approach, enter quantum physics. Quantum physics tells us essentially everything is made of energy — including us. Energy and matter are interchangeable, and, furthermore, energy, matter, space, and time are all aspects of the same thing. Is your mind blown yet?!
Which is all to say, with so much unseen going on around us and within us, there are plenty of mysteries in the universe humans have yet to solve. We have our individual beliefs, values, and internal compasses to follow when deciding how open we are to the unprovable, like the possibility that Reiki can help us heal and feel better.
The Popularity of Reiki
Perhaps Reiki is gaining popularity because we don’t always need a scientific explanation when something makes us feel good. We simply prefer to enjoy the way music sounds to our ears, or the feel of snuggling a beloved pet, or the ease of clicking the remote.
We almost don’t care why or how it happens. We just know what we want to experience.
Reiki is that, exactly: An experience. In my opinion, it’s a beautiful, powerful, relaxing, healing, love-centered, energy-balancing experience.
