Mila Says: Peter Pan

A Family Theater Adventure

Review by: Mila Vincent, Johanna Luza, and Nancy Churnin.

Nine-year-old Mila Vincent, Dallas’s youngest theater critic, collaborates with her grandmother, Johannah Luza, to provide a unique dual perspective on family theater. Their reviews offer insights from both a child’s and a grandparent’s viewpoint. For their latest outing, Mila and Johannah experienced the magic of Peter Pan for the first time. To add to the excitement, Mila’s six-year-old sister, Avivah, joined the adventure, turning it into a true family affair.

Here are their thoughts on this magical journey to Never Land!

Mila: I watched Peter Pan on the second night of Chanukah with my sister, Nancy Churnin, and our grandma. My sister Avivah and I had never seen it before. This version was set in modern times and had some really funny moments. We loved watching Peter Pan fly! Jonah Barricklo, the understudy for the main character, played Peter Pan. The understudy has to learn the entire play in case the lead actor gets sick. It was his national tour debut, and he was a fantastic Peter Pan! Can you imagine being an understudy without ever getting to play the part? I can’t!

We loved the songs, especially “I Won’t Grow Up.” Peter Pan meets Wendy and her brothers when he flies into their room, searching for his shadow. I loved that part of the story because of who lost his shadow— Peter Pan! Captain Hook (Cody Garcia) was mean and funny, and I enjoyed his songs.

No matter your age, you’ll love this show. My little sister is just six, and she watched every moment of it. My grandma is much older and enjoyed it as well! So did Nancy! Even if you’ve seen Peter Pan before, you should check out the Broadway play at Fair Park. You might even get some fairy dust on you at the end!

Johannah: I was truly impressed by the exceptional performance of the understudy—he was fantastic. The set design, colors, technology, and everything else were perfect. I appreciated that this production was set in modern times, making it easier for children to relate. When a six-year-old can’t take their eyes off the stage, you know it’s an outstanding production. Take your family to see it while it’s here—you’ll leave with a smile. The play is recommended for children six and older.
