Carl Reiner was a producer. He was a director. He was an actor. He was also a Grammy winner. He won nine Emmys in over seven decades and he has more than 400 credits.
Reiner’s career began at the dawn of television comedy and lasted more than six decades. He was hired by Sid Caesar for the live TV sketch comedy program Your Show of Shows. He was a writer alongside Woody Allen, Neil Simon, and his soon-to-be-best friend Mel Brooks, among others.
With Mel Brooks, Reiner co-created the memorable “2000-Year-Old Man” sketch. It began as a party and became a huge hit on television. It earned a Grammy nomination and sparked his writing career.
Many may remember Reiner best for “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” in which he created and starred.
Reiner played the role of an arrogant and egotistical comedian — Alan Brady — who terrorizes Dick Van Dyke’s character along with fellow writers Sally and Buddy.
Oh, and we cannot forget how he would make Dick’s wife, Laura, tremble (watch it here)!
The Dick Van Dyke show was a milestone in American sitcoms many families gathered around the TV to watch.
Let’s not forget a few of his other accomplishments, directing John Denver and George Burns in “Oh God” and “The Jerk,” with Steve Martin.
He also worked with Martin on “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid,” “Man with Two Brains,” and “All of Me.”
Reiner appeared in lots of TV shows and movies, including Parks and Recreation, “Two and a Half Men,” “House,” “Ocean’s 11” and “Ocean’s Thirteen.” He voices Carl Reineroceros in “Toy Story 4,” along with Henry in the TV Series “Bob’s Burgers.”
His credits are too numerous to list, but one thing is certain: Be it in an interview, on television, or on the big screen, Carl Reiner always left us laughing.
