Harmony in Nature

Learning from the rabbit's quiet strength

I just saw a young rabbit as I dragged my trash dumpster to the curb. A small flower bed stretches around our mailbox and along the driveway. Lately, juvenile rabbits have taken to hiding among the blue Salvia Guarantica, yellow Texas Greeneyes, and purple mistflower. They softly creep out of sight when I pass by at my usual hurried pace. Their soft brown fur blends seamlessly with the soil, and their wide brown eyes observe me as I do my chores. There’s a quiet beauty in their meekness that takes my breath away. These moments, small as they are, fill me with awe.

While rabbits are often unnoticed, their presence reminds me of a more profound truth. We don’t usually honor rabbits. When we decorate our flags, choose mascots for our schools, or name our sports teams, we seek out more boastful creatures—tigers, bobcats, and wolves, selected for their evident power. But there is strength in humility, too.

This thought leads me to reflect on the contrast between these aggressive animals and the humble rabbit. Giant creatures stride confidently, often leaving a trail of mistakes and destruction behind them. Rabbits, on the other hand—especially the tiny ones that fit in the palm of your hand—learn to listen.

As I’ve grown older, perhaps a bit wiser, I’ve learned the value of listening with a meek attitude. When I truly listen to others, I understand them better, and in doing so, I create a bridge of love that connects us. When I embrace meekness in my opinions and grandness in my silence, I discover the common ground we all share. We are all part of this vast tapestry of life.

Each of us plays an integral part in this world. No matter how small, every creature carries traits worth honoring—if only we take the time to notice. As I pass by the rabbit, I softly say, “Be careful, little friend. Enjoy this beautiful day of cool weather and sunshine.”

This quiet interaction reminds me of the harmony in all things. There is a time for the bobcat, and there is a time for the bunny. Take a few moments today to pay attention and listen to the spiritual lessons so abundant in nature. Nature is a patient teacher, never lacking in abundance. There are always new creatures, new opportunities, and new life to discover.

When I pause to observe these tiny wonders in nature, I remind myself that they reflect something much larger—a greater intelligence at work. Just as the rabbit listens intently to its surroundings, we can tune into the divine presence within and around us. In these quiet, awe-filled moments, I feel a deep connection to all life and a sense of peace that reminds me of the divine order in everything.

Finally, take a moment to connect with this wisdom. Sit outside for a while, or even open a window and listen to the birdsong. There is so much to hear—whether from nature, each other, or within each of us.
