Texas Hill Country

A wine lover's guide to Fredericksburg

For oenophiles in the Dallas area, or if you are visiting the Lone Star state, the perfect escape lies just a few hours south of Dallas in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, in the historic and lovely town of Fredericksburg. Beyond its presidential, military, and German immigrant history, the area offers world-class wine wrapped in true Texas spirit. Swap the expense and crowds of Napa Valley for the welcoming small-town hospitality where you can relax, sip a few wines, indulge in a fabulous dinner, and still make it back to Dallas on Sunday.

The rich history of Texas wine

Though the first Texas wines were sacramental wines made by Spanish missionaries near El Paso in the mid-17th century, Fredericksburg’s modern winemaking roots date back to the 1840s. The town’s German immigrants planted homegrown vines to produce the region’s earliest wines. Today, because of the Texas climate, vines are primarily from warmer areas like Spain and Italy.

Explore the heart of Texas wine country

The Texas Hill Country surrounding Fredericksburg is home to over 80 wineries and tasting rooms, making it one of the largest American Viticultural Areas, rivaling Napa Valley. This concentration of wineries and the area’s unique terroir and climate have established the region as a premier destination for wine enthusiasts.

Navigating Fredericksburg’s wineries

Start your weekend at one of Fredericksburg’s many tasting rooms to get a feel for the wine experience. Be sure to ask for Texas-grown and produced wines, as some wineries import grapes from California or other states. Try Viognier for white wine and Tempranillo for red. Both grapes grow well in Texas and make outstanding wines from a good producer.

Guided wine tours in the Texas Hill Country

For an immersive oenological experience, consider booking a Texas Hill Country wine tour. These guided excursions will introduce you to some of the area’s most renowned wineries, from family-owned boutique producers to larger, well-established estates. You’ll have the chance to chat with winemakers, learn about the unique terroir, and sample a wide variety of the region’s finest wines.

Beyond wine: Discovering Fredericksburg’s unique attractions

There are also a few breweries and distilleries in the area for those non-wine drinkers in your group. Other activities to consider include strolling through the historic district or one of the town’s many parks, visiting the picturesque lavender farms outside of the city, taking a side trip to the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Site or to The Preserve, where you can experience elephant conservation in action.

Dining and accommodations in Fredericksburg

Whether you want to visit wineries or prefer to visit museums or the surrounding natural area during the day, be sure to book a special Saturday night dinner at Cabernet Grill, which carries the largest selection of Texas wine in the area. Here, you can sample wines from around the state. The exceptional experience delivers food, wine, ambiance, and service as only Texas can.

For accommodations, the area has a good selection of hotels, inns, and bed-and-breakfasts, along with options through Airbnb, VRBO, or other booking sites. The town also hosts many restaurants, cafes, bars, boutiques, and other establishments so you won’t go hungry, thirsty, or bored.
