In late 2020, amidst the chaos and uncertainty, I reflected deeply on managing stress—especially for our children. At the time, I was completing my second master’s degree in kinesiology, focusing on integrative wellness. My research highlighted the power of complementary and alternative medicine for children facing anxiety and depression. As a professor, parent, and yoga teacher since 2011, I was especially struck by the profound impact yoga could have on children’s mental health, providing an evidence-based way to navigate complex emotions so many were feeling during turbulent times.
Like many, I struggled with fear and frustration as the world shifted, but yoga became my anchor. The daily practice became my sanctuary, a way to find stillness amid the noise and chaos. Alongside my mentor, Vanitha Swaminathan, I explored yoga’s philosophy and its role in emotional well-being while working on our picture book, “A Rainbow Inside My Body.” Writing about yoga helped me process my emotions and reminded me of its lessons, even on difficult days.
Yoga and storytelling became my survival tools, and I am thankful for them.
Writing the children’s book led to the birth of Eleonora, the joyful sloth. She teaches children (and adults) that feeling strong emotions is normal and okay. She reminds us that strong emotions— fear, anger, or sadness— are a part of being human, and we must respond to those feelings with gentle care and support.
Yoga offers gentle movements, breathing exercises, and meditative reflections. These practices are accessible to everyone, regardless of age or ability. They invite us to slow down, breathe, and remember that we’re not alone in our struggles.
Naming the character of Eleonora was personal. She is a tribute to my mother, Eleanor, a beloved elementary school teacher and librarian who connected with children through love, understanding, and warmth. Through “Yoga with Eleonora,” I hope to carry on her legacy of kindness and healing.
This project has inspired me to launch a new column dedicated to helping families manage stress through exploring yoga. I’ll share simple yoga practices, breathing exercises, and mindfulness techniques to help children and adults find calm amidst the chaos. Collaborating with fellow yoga teachers, including Swaminathan, we’ll offer beneficial information from various perspectives and expertise and explore ways to stay grounded and manage big emotions, even during the busiest times.
Let’s embark on this journey together, cultivating a more mindful, connected, and peaceful year ahead. Stay tuned!
