Tech You Never Knew You Needed

Tis the season to contemplate presents for a holiday party, friendly gathering, or personal event.

I love exploring the gift-giving and gadget sites to find things I never knew existed. Then I can wonder: Do I gift it to me, or to someone else?

Bose frames ($199)

These sunglasses are Bluetooth-enabled with built-in speakers. They’ll play your favorite tunes for you and you alone.

LED Tweezers ($7–$18)

Available in various styles and angled points, all have an LED light in the middle of the tongs that projects onto the thing you are trying to work with or pull out.

Petcube Bites 2 Wi-Fi Pet Camera with Treat Dispenser ($229)

Watch little Waldo while you’re at work in full HD video. You can hear or speak through the app, toss treats a variety of distances, and schedule automatic treat dispensing. Real-time sound and motion notifications tell you when your pet is active and available for a quick look.

Rocketbook Smart Reusable Notebook ($34)

A 32-page lined notebook you can use endlessly by wiping clean with a damp cloth. With the included pen, you can send handwritten notes to any number of cloud servers, like Google Drive or iCloud.

Oral-B Pro 7000 SmartSeries Toothbrush with Bluetooth ($175)

This smart brush tracks your brushing habits and gives you brushing tips. It tells you when you’re brushing too hard and even orders new brush heads when necessary. You can adjust the speed of the heads up to 800 brush movements per second, and the water pressure can remove up to 300% more plaque than a regular manual brush. Your dentist will like how it helps your teeth.

Smart Toilets ($1,200–$4,500)

These hi-tech toilets use less water and include built-in night lights in the bowl that change color. They have auto-lift lids, auto-flush sensors, seat-warmers, bidets with adjustable water temperature and pressure, air dryers, Bluetooth-enabled speakers, and touch screen remotes. How did we live without this?

Gita, the Cargo-Carrying Companion Robot ($1,850–$2,950)

The Gita is a two-wheeled cargo-carrying robotic vehicle designed to follow its owner while carrying up to 40 pounds of cargo. The unit can roll up to 22 miles per hour, which is fast enough to keep up with a runner or a bicyclist, and has a range of 12 miles or four hours of travel on a two-hour charge.

Smart Water Bottle ($69–$120)

Self-cleaning and insulated water bottles with lids use non-toxic, mercury-free UV-C LED technology to sanitize water and clean the inner surfaces of the bottle by neutralizing odor-causing bacteria and viruses. Most work at the touch of a button; others can self-clean every two hours.

KUSONKEY Magnetic Wristband ($12)

A wristband with 15 super strong magnets, it will hold tight to nails, screws, drill bits, and fasteners. Now you don’t have to hold all that in your mouth.

Grillbot Automatic Grill Cleaning Robot ($110)

If you have a grill with a lid, you can set the timer on this robotic scrubber, close the lid, and let Grillbot’s nylon brushes clean all that BBQ grime off your grates. Easy-peasy.

And don’t forget the best gift of all: The proof-of-purchase receipt for any present you thought was amazing that the receiver might amazingly choose to return.
