Spring Into Reading: Books Your Grandchildren Will Love
Spring arrives in layers — first the crocuses, then the holidays, and finally the long, slow exhale of warm afternoons. If you have little ones in your life, this is the season made for reading together.
We’ve rounded up four spring books — two board books for the tiniest readers and two picture books for story time — that belong in every grandchild’s basket this season. Whether you’re celebrating Passover, Easter, or simply the joy of spring, there’s something here for everyone.
It’s Passover, Grover!
Picture book | Ages 2–4
By Jodie Shepherd | Illustrated by Joe Mathieu
Grover hosts a Passover Seder where more and more guests keep arriving — honoring the beautiful tradition of “let all who are hungry come and eat.” The story follows the search for the hidden matzah (afikomen) and introduces little ones to the seder plate and Passover customs in the most delightful way. I laughed out loud when Grover declared, “Is matzah not marvelously munchy and crunchy?” The paperback includes stickers, a seder plate poster, and a press-out matching card game — bonus fun for the whole family. The message is simple and lovely: there’s room for everybody at the Passover table.

ABCs of Kindness at Easter
By Patricia Hegarty | Illustrated by Summer Macon
Board book | Ages 3 months–3 years
A is for affection as Eastertime nears. B is for bunnies with big, floppy ears. This sweet rhyming board book pairs the alphabet with Easter imagery and gentle lessons in kindness — perfect for the youngest readers in your life. With shiny foil on the cover and adorable illustrations on every page, it makes a wonderful gift tucked into an Easter basket. Simple, warm, and beautifully designed for little hands.

Grumpy Monkey Spring Fever
By Suzanne Lang | Illustrated by Max Lang
Picture book | Ages 3–7
He’s baaack! Jim Panzee — everyone’s favorite grump — has caught a bad case of spring fever and wakes up feeling uncharacteristically silly and energetic. This just isn’t the grumpy Jim anyone knows. His worried jungle friends try everything to cure him: calming breaths, lavender sniffing, time-outs, and naps. Nothing works. Jim just did not want to be calm! So they suggest he turn his energy into something enjoyable — paint eggs, plant flowers, or listen to a story. Jim joined in. Turns out spring fever is contagious — and before long the whole jungle erupts into a silly springtime celebration. Lively illustrations and bonus stickers make this a perfect read-aloud for the youngest ones in your life.

BUGS
A Peek-Through Board Book
By Britta Teckentrup
Board book | Ages 0–3
There’s something magical about a book that makes bugs irresistible to a toddler — and to the grandparent reading alongside them. Peek-through leaf-shaped holes on each page reveal bugs chomping, creeping, flying, and spinning, while little ones discover different insect species and their habitats. Whether your grandchild is already an insect enthusiast or just naturally curious, this is a beautiful way to share a love of science and nature together.

Any one of these spring books would make a wonderful addition to an Easter basket, a Passover gift bag, or simply a cozy afternoon on the couch. Happy reading — and happy spring!
